Coming from impossible-to-manage monster #538904: D8UX: Redesign Modules Page here's one of the splitoff issues: reduce visual clutter in Modules page. This issue does not create entirely new design fo the page, it focuses juston hiding some existing elements in modules table, grouping / filtering / searching are not part of this issue.

From @eigentor in http://drupal.org/node/538904?page=1#comment-6392392

Quite a broad consensus is there to get rid of the dependency information.
Next in line may be hiding the version information also. The description is
last and kept in almost every mockup.

Here's two approaches to de-cluttering:

Approach 1: Remove version and dependency information, add a global toggle to show / hide extra information. This is somewhat similar to "Show descriptions / Hide descriptions" UX in Configuration page: novice users do not see unnecessary information, advanced users will see it. Single click will toggle between the modes.

1A: Default state:

1B: "Show more info" is clicked:

Approach 2: Remove version and dependency information, make each module expandable separately.

2A: Default state:

2B: Comment module pane is expanded.

Questions / notes:

- How to handle showing compatibility errors on modules?
- It would be nice to follow some styling choices from Status report table (error row icons, vertical-align: top etc.). It should be done on seprarate issue though.
- Action buttons should likely be converted to #1480854: Convert operation links to '#type' => 'operations'

Also note that the design solution should be compatible to upcoming responsive admin tables initiative what removes certain table columns when viewport is smaller. Below are two modules page mockups for smaller screens:

Sorry, but I am going to close this issue - please add this to the existing thread. I don't think it makes much sense to split it up, into several issues before we reached some consensus in what direction the fix should be.

I would really like if we can all just spend one UX-Hour hashing this thing out, and then opening one issue with the final solution. Rather than having basically a Module redesign 2.0 issue, where we again go over all the possible ways to fix this.

Sorry, but its really not a good idea to fragment the discussion.
