When I make changes to a custom View I always get default edit option set to "All views" (drop down list).
And once I make some accidentally change it changes all (blocks, pages etc.. ) And to redo this you need to cancel changes and start the process again...
I think by changing default to "This [View_type] (override)" will be good improvement for UI.

This is all a matter of perspective, but in general usage all views is the more common case.

Part of the difference comes from this: When you first create a view and are working on the first display, you usually want those on all displays, not on just this display.

When adding more displays, that's when you wnat your changes to just be local.

It may be a sign that you're overusing single views with multiple displays if you're running into this. You generally should prefer a new view unless the displays are really sharing a lot of data.

In any case, changing this now would harm more than it helps.

If only 1 or 2 View displays created (set "All Views" as default drop-down option). And if more than 2 displays, set to "This [View_name] (override)".
Currently this makes more sense to me.

To my mind It's easier to select "All views" from drop-down to make a change rather than modifying all Views back to their proper settings after misconfiguration.

I am sorry, but I am afraid that I completely disagree with you, and while it would make things easier in your case, it would make things harder in other cases.

Rather than changing the default behaviour of Views, why not give the user the choice to change the default view option (in the advanced options) themselves if they wish? Essentially rather than being stuck with the default setting, we have the option to change the default if we'd like too.

I understand the reasoning for the 'all views' option being the default (for most cases) however there are still cases where the alternative is a more useful solution (as I'd like this feature myself).

Alternatively, as a compromise, perhaps we could look at a way the view reports what other views will be effected by a particular change, before it's committed? I know that on the odd occasion I've made a change and not anticipated the cascading changes through the other views linked to the primary view/master display (hey, I'm human :P)

Anyway, just thought I'd add my thoughts in here as I was searching the views issue queue for the exact same reason the OP no doubt was.

I second this. The time I have already lost with correcting overridden displays when I wanted to change only 1 display is the reason why I want to say something myself.

Imagine that the default would be "override"

If (in any case) you change a display and save it without checking ... no harm done. Open the change again and select "All displays". Not too much effort.

In the case the "All displays" is default and you forget to change ... sometimes it is a disaster. e.g. You have a display with 10 fields of which some have rewrites and other stuff set. Now I want a second display (for a block) with only 2 fields of the 10. You delete 8, forget to change, ... no way to get it back.

I agree with merlin that the default behavior only changes when there are more than 1 display + master.
An option in the settings would be great thou. Everyone can select what they want.

workiing in drupal 8.9.4 and the default "All" causes some very time consuming mistakes. A preference option would be great!
