Themes/modules in diffrent directories

I am making a drupal host, and I want to ftp the modules and themes up ONCE.
I am thinking of making a common dir, and uploading them there. Please tell me how I can do this with diffrent sites all accessing it. Also, can I make it so there are always ads(unless people pay)?
