Having spent about an hour trying different versions of CKEditor to see which one works with the latest version of the module, and found loads of duplicates of this problem in the issue queue, and then eventually found the list of the supported versions at https://www.drupal.org/node/596966 can I suggest you simply add a link from /admin/config/content/wysiwyg to https://www.drupal.org/node/596966 ? Also, changing the error text that displays when you install an unsupported version to "A supported version of CKEditor cannot be found" would help, as the existing message "The version of CKeditor could not be detected" isn't very helpful (and actually doesn't make sense) - it just makes you think you've uploaded the library into the wrong directory or something.

Im not sure this module is getting any more updates - yesterday i started a issue asking about updates, as stable version wasnt updated for 6 years.

Though, i know that stable version works up till latest TinyMCE 3.x, and same with CKeditor 3.x - 4.x not working with stable release.
And other texteditors are not worth mentioning, as these 2 are the leading texteditors on the internet (even Facebook uses TinyMCE, so does Wordpress [eew, Wordpress] ).

So, i hope that answers the question :)

OK fair enough, only two releases since it was first released for D7 years ago... someone is presumably patrolling the issues list though so this sort of small tweak would presumably help cut down on reports of this!

I like small and self-contained requests like this. I can fix them without getting distracted. ;)

The list of supported editor versions is currently linked from the project page. Adding it to the installation instructions would indeed make sense. The patch in #2375679: Improve profile management was intended to aid in not only moving between versions, but also clearly showing which versions are supported and known to work, right there in the profile overview page.

Please help close any duplicates you find and focus the information on either the first issue, or the one with the most relevant and to-the-point information.

Just the past weeks I've been trying to get a grip on the queue again, and even during that time new issues keep getting created about subjects already discussed elsewhere.

And yes, there will be more versions of the module. I'm not giving up on it and I hope you are not giving up hope in me.
