My question is pretty simple: why not use the entity API in order to change the records in the DB? I also saw that there is request for porting this module to drupal 8 and as we all know a lot of the information is stored via the entity API that got merged in to core.
Didn't saw any issues that would fit that.

abrammTo whom it may be interesting, I've made an effort create a voting api <-> entity api bridge module. It does not replace voting api database code but still provides Entity API access to votes.
