@dawehner - Awesome, thanks! I updated the contrib porting tracker with this info: #2622336: [views_tree] Views tree.

Also, are you interested in becoming a maintainer for this module? I no longer use it on any actively-maintained sites, so I've been reluctant to work on any of the issues that might just need a review/merge for D7, and I'm probably not going to do anything with it for D8 at least for the forseeable future. Not sure about Crell's involvement either, but I'm guessing he's in a similar place?

Well I'm also just scratching my itch here, given that I need this for a client, but sure, being able to convert help out a bit, wouldn't be necessarily a bad idea.
