There is: http://drupal.org/node/827846/git-instructions/7.x-1.x It's just not available as packaged download.

...well, that doesn't help at all

- people cannot get to it (instructions on the project's page please)
- we cannot file any issues against that branch
- we have no idea of user-base stats (http://drupal.org/project/usage/vat)
