Support for Drupal 7 is ending on 5 January 2025—it’s time to migrate to Drupal 10! Learn about the many benefits of Drupal 10 and find migration tools in our resource center.
On https://www.drupal.org/docs/user_guide/en/language-content-config.html, step 5, the 2nd sentence reads “Enabling translation for fields that are numbers or dates has use for accountability or implementing workflows.” I don’t quite understand what that means. Can someone give an example or elaborate? Is "accounting" meant, instead of "accountability"? As in, to translate/convert currency numbers? And what about "implementing workflows"? Can someone give an example of what is meant here? As someone new to building multilingual sites, I'm confused.

jhodgdonGood question!
Let's see... As far as workflows go, I think that would mostly apply to date fields. For example, you might want to "translate" the 'authored on' or 'changed' dates for a piece of content in order to say that the English page was authored on Jan 1, but the French page was authored on Feb 4 (or whatever the translation date was).
I have no idea what "accountability" would mean in this context though, and I don't think we'd specifically need to mention accounting for numeric fields. Hm.
So maybe we should just remove this sentence entirely, so that the paragraph only says:
???

jhodgdonI also looked up the issues where we originally wrote/edited this topic. I found:
#2541668: Write language-content-config.txt -- this text was in the original writing of the topic
#2711103: Content edit: language-content-config.txt -- left that text and added a table of fields/values to that item
#2788943: Copy edit language-content-config.txt -- nothing about this text there
So, I guess we didn't ever question it since it was originally written.

Amber Himes MatzThanks for explanation and re-wording suggestion! I agree with your suggestion to remove that sentence entirely. +1

Amber Himes MatzCreating a patch...assigning to myself.

Amber Himes MatzHere's a patch removing the confusing sentence. Also removed an extra line break which is why the diff is a little odd.

jhodgdonLooks great to me, thanks!
We'll need to notify the translation groups about the change, so adding tag and I'll get it committed probably tomorrow.
jhodgdonAlthough maybe we should get a second opinion from Joe, just in case he knows what it means and we should reword rather than remove?
eojthebraveNope. I'm not clear on what that sentence means either. I assume it's intended to try and help clarify when/why you would translate something like an integer field or a date, but as written I don't find it helpful. I'm fine with removing it. I think the intricacies of what to translate and when are probably better suited for the community documentation's multilingual guide here https://www.drupal.org/docs/8/multilingual

jhodgdonThanks Joe.
At the moment, I don't see anything at all useful in the Multilingual Guide, but who knows, more content could appear.
Anyway, I'll get this committed later today or at least soon.

jhodgdonCommitted, and I'll send out the translation notification now.
Thanks again Joe and Amber!
