I downloaded the distribution from the site and not the install profile.

When I add a topic I get a page with the url

localhost/mysite-name//mysite-name

and an error by my system saying page is not found.

While I see the topics, there are no items under the other topics

Try installing as a subdomain virtualhost, not as a subfolder.

i set it up as its own domain. am i missing something?

I don't know - I can not see your installation :)

If you set it up as its own domain, from the latest tar.gz and you got no errors and cron is running and clean URLs are working properly - it should work.

I think the problem here is the redirection after the topic is created to

localhost/mydirectory/ /mydirectory

mydirectory is the directory where items are created on my localhost
