The stage_file_proxy_sslversion variable seems not to be used at all.

Removed variable as not used within the request. Patch attached.

If the module wants to support ssl verification the options passed should be something like this: https://api.drupal.org/comment/62159#comment-62159 so I guess it could just be a checkbox. But probably this part is a feature request (sort of) and probably not needed.

Code-wise this looks like what is needed. And contains an update function.
Have not tested though.
(Hmm, ynd why has our testbot hiccups?)

As there hasn't been movement on this in years going to close out as D7 support is being dropped. Will keep an eye out for security issues but active support is a no go.
