A optional button for this would be very handy, a la Fusion theme or 'Theme info'.

mxmilkiib CreditAttribution: mxmilkiib commentedSorry for the confusion! The Fusion theme has an option to display a button which toggles the grid overlay using JS - fusionGridMaskToggle at the bottom of its script.js. I found it a great help to be able to toggle the Fusion grid on and off directly on a page during work instead of having to keep the theme settings open. Somewhat in a similar style is devel_themer's "Themer info" button. Thanks for your time.
