dropdown menu doesn't close on mobile

My dropdown menu on a mobile device was only working on the homepage so I used a fix to set "HTML TAG FOR NOLINK as suggested in comment #6 on https://drupal.org/node/811568
This solved the problem, and now the menu opens on all pages, however, it doesn't close now!
Do I need to change some of the code to make sure the menu closes when one doesn't hover over it?
(comment #8 has a code change suggestion but it doesn't work with the version I am using)
I am using regular drupal menus and special_menu_items
