After years of enjoying a relatively spam free site, in the past month or so we have been getting a lot of spam in forums and via the contact form. It has been escalating dramatically, so what was a few a day is moving towards the hundreds range. We know what this looks like in a few days or weeks and are trying to stop this. Spambot has been active on our site non-stop for years, so why would this start happening now? It is possible something is failing with that service, or is there something else we are doing wrong (we haven’t made any changes to our configure in years)?

You could look through your database log, filtered by spambot messages. But in general there seems to have been a major uptick in spam recently, probably a huge network of newly compromised systems due to a recently exploited vulnerability or something.
