When I go to the admin/config/media/socialmedia platforms and select/de-select, the changes don't take. Likewise the changes to the share list don't stick when I submit.

I think I had the same or a similar problem. I purchased a theme (CorporateX by DoubleMThemes) which uses the Social Media module, and the widget sets were already configured, and one of the sets was used as a "Follow Us" block. I changed the settings in the admin/config/media/socialmedia platforms screen, hoping to remove all the links I didn't plan to use on my site, but removing the platforms there did not affect the widget set being displayed in my block. The solution was to remove the unwanted platforms from the active widget set. I followed these steps:

1) To get to the active socialmedia widget set, go to: Structure->Widgets

2) Find a row for the active set (in my case it was called socialmedia_profile-buttons) and click "edit"

3) In the list of "elements", delete the rows for platforms you don't want to use

4) Click "Update Set"

5) In Configuration->Performance click "Clear all Caches"

Thanks. Worked for me ....
Maybe we missed something in the documentation - should be emphasized that there are sets of widgets that we (users) have to deal with.
