I've started a D8 port here: https://github.com/md-systems/simplenews_statistics

Done:
* Open and click tracking
* Basic functionality, settings, etc.
* Tests is passing except of the changed simplenews_statistics behavior as that only has data after archiving. Also *lots* of cleanup there

Todo:
* Views integration
* Submodules

Would you like commit access to this project?

I believe there was a discussion under way at one point to have some form of statistics in the core Simplenews module, but I suspect this idea has been abandoned?

Hope to get some spare time to help port modules over to D8, but I suspect this won't be till January, so I appreciate anything you have done. Many thanks.

There is now also the Simplenews Stats module.
