I suggest expanding the automated testing options for both branches. The D7 branch could use a test against PHP 7, while the D8 branch could use tests against a few different core branches.

I already set up the D8 branch to test against both 8.4 and 8.5. Are you thinking more than that? Adding PHP 7 to the D7 branch makes sense.

I tried a preliminary test using PHP7 for D7 and the empty values don't get stripped out. I'll have to dig into that.
