If a content type's scheduling ist set to
- Require scheduled publishing
- Require scheduled unpublishing
the required fields might be forgotten by editors if they sit in a closed vertical tab. You won't even get a clue when using certain theme settings, but that would lead too far.
Required fields sitting in a closed tab should be indicated by a required marker in the tab label - and/or the closed tab should be openend as an error response. Module field_group is aware of that behavior: http://drupal.org/node/1018012
(Found an interesting issue here, related to the 6.x version: Option to always expand scheduler fieldsets, by the way.)

jonathan1055 CreditAttribution: jonathan1055 as a volunteer commentedThe automatic opening option is good for themes like Seven which have a details element, and it works fine. But for themes that have side tabs, like Bartik, this is still a relevant problem. The tab cannot be opened, and we should not select it automatically, so a visual indicator would be good.
Moving to 2.x to see if there is any appetite for working on this on the new default themes Claro and Olivero.
