For instance, if I create 2 variables and calculate the sum as another variable, all 3 variables are accessible via Data Selector for an action such as "System: Show a message on the site" and I can show them all individually.

However if I want to show them all as part of a single system message such as "[var1] + [var2] = [var3]", None of these variables are listed in the Replacement Patterns, and also the system message simply outputs "[var1] + [var2] = [var3]" verbatim.

Do I need to flick a switch or install another module, or is this a limitation / bug within Rules?

I rather think this is still a valid support request, but likely duplicate of #1415370: Variables as tokens in direct input mode.
