script execute time

Hi,

We have a large webiste with an equally large number of roles to show the different roles within the organisation and also to give them the correct privileges on the site. We have thousands of users and about a hundred roles in the system.

When the user edit page is shown, the javascript takes ages to run, with less time this is fine, but on our site this causes the browser to request the continuation of the script process once in firefox on a reasonable computer but upto 10 times with IE7 on a slower XP machine. This poses two problems for us:
- usability - it takes a long time to edit each user and we have a lot to maintain
- security concern. if the script is stopped the roles are not disabled so that they are checked - are the submitted role changes validated on the server - we are sort of working on trust with our membership secretaries at the moment.
