I found thais module today and was thinking whats the difference between using the module or doind a manual rewrite in .htaccess. That would save a bootstrap on robots.txt request.

Is the differende only the better usability? Thank you.

You or your SEO team cannot edit the robots.txt from the Drupal admin interface if you don't use this module. And much more fun with multisite...
