How do I remove the counter (x new) messages in the menu link?

I on the other hand wouldn't mind knowing how to make it show. I realized I had 4 PMs and there was no notification in counter.

For removing the counter in the menu link, can't you just disable the menu item and create a new menu item linking to the same page but without a counter?

Just change the menu link to something else like "Inbox"
