I am trying to save a URL alias for the 'User Paths' section. I add 'users/[user:cas:name]' to the field and save configuration. I receive no error messages, says 'The configuration options have been saved.'
When I scroll back down to the User Paths section the field is empty.

Is this cas:name a cck text field of yours ?
I tried reproducing your issue by adding a cas name cck field under Account settings and using the same as User path pattern like this
users/[user:field_cas_name]
The field is saved properly and does not become empty. Can you please provide more info on your issue.
