Once this CTools issue (#813754: Ability to set variant machine name in Panels UI) is committed, we will have the ability to customize our page manager variant machine names. That's great for creating new variants, but for existing variants some code is needed to allow us to edit them.

MichelleI tested this per the instructions in the CTools issue and it works great!
Unlike the other two patches, this one applied cleanly with no offset so no new patch needed.
