I can not save the changes i make to my sub-theme layout. When i look at the errors in the syslog it tells me that the style and layout files are not configured correctly. They both have full permissions. Not sure why it is not working. What am i missing.

a few more details please Cimadttam,

I was stuck here as well, for a number of issues.
After permissions, check ownership. My dev machine created the new folders for root instead of www-data.
