it would be sooo great using this module for referencing users. Any idea what or how it should be done?

gnindl CreditAttribution: gnindl commentedYes of course, everything is possible.
I created an initial patch for first testing. It only works with the style "Table (Selectable)" currently. Further you have to create a user view manually and configure the userreference field.
TODO:
- Include default user view
- Create additional plugin callbacks for handling
- Code clean up

ShadowMonster CreditAttribution: ShadowMonster commentedYou should not make patch from sites/default/modules - not everybody use that - instead this use directly path of module started from nodereference_explorer/
Attached corrected path to apply from module folder
Test against 6.x-1.6
