Yes, this appears to work in a similar (if not the same) way to 'reference views'. Also I don't think though you need to make the view the same name as the node-reference field which is a bonus.

I'm probably going to start work on a D7 version of my project fairly soon.

Would the maintainer of this project be interested in collaborating and merging projects? I'd happily take on a co-maintainer.

@joachim Yes I think that would be a good idea also in http://drupal.org/node/1325018 yuri mentions that this might be something that should get rolled in to a entity referencer. Maybe we can get with them and solve this issue for all entities with the node one as a special case?
