Would it be possible to provide vid when a node is cloned? This could help other modules.
For example, we've started a Node Clone Relation module that tracks version as well: https://www.drupal.org/node/2466867#comment-10951997

This one-liner patch applies cleanly to latest 7.x stable (and most likely to dev), and I don't see how it could break anything, so marking it as such.
