Search box moved from theme layer to blocks in D7 but $page['search_box'] is used in page.tpl.php.

$page['search_box'] is a region made for the search form. $search_box in Drupal 6 was specific to the search form. There is a difference and this is by design.

In my subtheme .info, I mistakenly removed regions[search_box] and this led to the confusion. I'm sorry for the noise.
