I'm working on setting up MySite as a personalized presentation site - in other words, as a home page that users would show to others, rather than one they'd use themselves. (I saw that there was already some discussion on using MySite for this) As such, I'd like to be able to give them a default layout where each user's own blog was already presented. At current, it doesn't seem possible to select the user's own blog in the default content, only a specific blog.

agentrickardTrue. You might try looking at how profile.inc handles this. It should be fairly easy to write a "myblog" or "mystuff" plugin that would let the user select his/her own content for their page.
This would be a good project to document, and I'd love to see someone give it a shot.
Filing against HEAD, as 5.x.2 is a stable release.
