There is no need to become a maintainer and for a sandbox module. You could simply create a patch with your port and I will have a loo onto it.

Uhm, you check out 7.x-1.x as described in the git instructions, create a new local branch and start porting ... Afterwards you create a patch by diffing both branches and upload it here.
