Tokens for referring user do not work

Hello,

I would like to include the username of the referring user in the membership plan welcome email that is sent to the new referred user. Unfortunately, none of those referrer-specific tokens work. Why is this? How can it be fixed? They also do not work when sending the email via Rules.
