Consider photography, social media, community sites based on media_gallery using media 7.x-1.x whose owners want to move to media_gallery using media 2.x for benefits of bug fixes and new functionality. How are they going to migrate 1000s of photos in galleries to be on their new site running media 2.x?
My suggestion would be a utility to export into an open format (jpegs+xml) and a tool to re-import it into the media 2.x site.

Moloc CreditAttribution: Moloc commentedWe are working on media 2.x compatibility in #1244204: Make media_gallery work with media-7.x-2.x branch
The upgrade path will probably be #1349058: Convert 'Media' fields to 'File' fields that use the 'Media file selector' widget.

therobyouknow CreditAttribution: therobyouknow commentedThanks @Moloc - do you think there will be a solution from this weekend's Atlanta code sprint (Oct 26)?
If not I think I'm going to have to abandon Panopoly :( until this issue is resolved: without media_gallery supporting media 2.x in Panopoly, there is no way to support multiple image uploading.

Moloc CreditAttribution: Moloc commentedWe do not create a release this weekend.
There are some new issues, that needs to be tested and fixed with media 2.x.
Just to mention: plupload also works with media 1.x (to upload multiple files at once).

therobyouknow CreditAttribution: therobyouknow commentedThanks @Isolesen I had a look at the RC9-blockers, at time of writing, I'm new to Drupal code but I would really like to try to help with these. I'll read them through a couple of times, read around the documentation for them, documentation on APIs. I'm in the process of evaluating debuggers to step through the code to help me understand it -- and see that any fixes I might do solve the problems. All of this will take time, and may be too long for media_gallery, by then the issues may be fixed, but I will still try as I will be able to help fix other modules in the future. I am already progressing up the Drupal Ladder curriculum to help me get skilled-up (drupalladder.org).
