I never saw this posted as a separate thread, and was curious to know the answer. On the Drupal 8 Contrib Porting Tracker for Media (https://www.drupal.org/node/2595163), @freelylw posted the following message:

I am going to start a D7 site now, so,what should I used for the video upload now?? It seems there are lots of new selection for D8, should I still use the "media"+ media_vimeo and medis_youtube now ? or should I use another one ?? Please suggest !!! its really difficult to understand what's the best for now and for the upgrade to D8 in the next.

If you open an issue on the media project page here: https://www.drupal.org/project/media (specifying D7), then we can have a discussion there and I can help you to work through a solution to your question. Your strategy for a D7 site will be somewhat different than for a D8 site.

I'd like to broaden this beyond just video uploads and ask about general recommendations for new D7 projects. We'd like to make sure any choices we make now can be the best possible choices for where things will be in the future.

Recent versions of media have resolved most of peoples concerns and is compatible with entity translation, multilingual and various advanced configurations. Due to the high volume of inactive and most often irrelevant issues we are Closing this as (outdated). If for whatever reason this issue is important to you AND you still have issues after checking the media recipe documentation, then let us know and we will review your concerns.

Otherwise, see the recipe documentation for how to configure media and for troubleshooting tips OR refer to the media_dev distribution if you want to see a working media setup.

As mentioned, feel free to make some noise in this issue if you still feel it is important to you or someone else.
