trying to use maps from mapping kit on 5.x I used Embed widgets module http://drupal.org/project/embed_widgets
to parse 6.x node content on 5.x nodes but...
map objects do not show up on nodes when used as widgets from Embed widgets module

I don't know the Embed widgets module so I can't really help you with that one. There are probably easier ways to show maps in Drupal 5.x; maybe by using the mapbuilder module (not maintained anymore, but still usable for mapbuilder version 1.0.1), or the gmap module.
But in the end, there should be some advantages to upgrading to drupal 6 ;-)
