Can you upgrade to latest version and see whether problems persist?

The version of OpenLayers that is bundled with Managing News only includes minimal support for layer types. You can switch to use the hosted version of OpenLayers instead, which will add support for Google, Yahoo!, and VirtualEarth.

Go to admin/build/openlayers at set the OpenLayers source to the following URL:
http://openlayers.org/api/OpenLayers.js

Next, go to admin/build/openlayers/layers/settings and ensure that you have provided the necessary API keys.

Hope that helps! If not, please include your browser and version in further posts. Thanks!

I also had Google Maps not showing - displaying only a grey / gray box.

The fix in #3 worked for me to show the Google Maps.

However, now after doing that, the MN Custom Popup and MN Scaled Points no longer work.

When I switch back to using the local copy of OpenLayers.js provided with MN, once again the MN Popup and MN Scaled Points work again, but Google Maps doesn't work.

I do need the Custom Popup and Scaled Points.

Has anybody got them both working with Google Maps at the same time?

Setting it to the following made it so that both Google Maps as well as the MN Custom Behaviors work together:
