Jquery UI is a compilation of tools, one of them is the dialog. It does not provide any tools for those, nor an interface. It just includes the JS-Files.

jquery ui dialog creates an interface to use this dialog the drupal way including special templates for dialog content and so forth. In addition it adds a iframe implementation to the dialog, which is not implemented with the classical jquery ui dialog approach.

Hope this helps

Thanks Eugen. Can I use the two together?

Do they clash? I assume both include jquery ui.

Jquery ui is a dependency of jquery ui dialog :) so ofc you can.
You can also use the dialog with jquery ui dialog or the normal one - so they clash at all ( also at the same time )
