I installed the latest version 7.x-3.x from https://github.com/linnovate/openideal

Can this be included on the drupal project page?
Have all features of the 2.x version been put into the 3.x version already?
Theme seems not completely ready..but looks promising

Sure, a new tag is in the oven. I would love your feedback on this branch: https://github.com/linnovate/openideal/tree/7.x-3.x-consolidate from which the new tag will be created.

For some reason I can't get it installed using the consolidated code from github. Can you post it as a dev version here on the drupal project page?

Drupal 9 is almost here!
OpenideaL 7.x is no longer supported.
Current development and support is done on the Drupal 8 branch (https://www.drupal.org/project/idea/releases/3.x-dev)
If you find this issue still relevant for D8, please do not hesitate to re-open this issue or create a new one.
