Hi jmburnz (and adaptivethemes team),

If possible, I formally request a port of Genesis for Drupal 7 so we can start contributing cool Genesis subthemes for the 7.x platform.

I believe that this would pave way for other contributors to iron-out code and make more themes available before D7 gets officially released.

I personally want to make sure that Genesis Base starter theme gets full throttle in the future. Not only because it's a theme that rocks! but also because it's code semantics are really awesome.

Its a bit too early for D7 release right now, mainly due to some really big outstanding patches for D7 theme layer that need to be committed before I will really go hard on a D7 version. Of course I already have a working D7 branch in CVS but the theme will probably break on a clean install of current D7 head.

As we approach code freeze I'll get a lot more interested in this, maybe in early August I'll revisit this with earnest and start the real work - many many things are changing. Additionally I would have had 3 months developing full time on Genesis2 so I'll know every weakness by then and be able to make even more improvement for D7:)

I'll postpone this for now, to come back to in late July, early August.

Thanks for the heads up.

I obviously am not aware about the pending D7 theme layer changes (I'm afraid I haven't read any article nor dug into the code about it). It is indeed a wise move to wait for the code freeze to anticipate any changes for the transition.

I'll wait for the siren call on August (or late July as you've predicted).

For now I'll keep mastering the Genesis subthemes for comparison.

@marcrobinsone

It's generally wise to wait until the code freeze before writing code for D7. Up until that point, there is always a possibilitycore could undergo a major change that would break everything you've written.

Many people often wait for the RCs even, because there are still occasional small code changes as a result of bug fixes after the code freeze.

The code freeze is expected for September sometime.

I believe time could be ripe for bringing this out from the hidden corner as not only D7 is coming along nicely (alpha2, and a quite stable one) but also Spring is pushing through and the birch zap starts to flow towards heaven - so an excelent time for Genisis to resurect and come to life again!

First question that need an answer I belive, for anyone passing by, is the current Genisis-7.x-1.x-dev release useable or it has known major flaws?

Theres no big flaws at this stage, its running just fine on my local testing sites.

I need to review all the tpl files and the major task at this stage is re-writing the CSS files that come with the theme, since much has changed in D7 and we have a lot more markup to deal with.

Right now the best thing is to download it and start building some themes with it and posting back bug reports etc. D7 theme layer is a brave new world, much has changed.

As you may have noticed I have started working on the D7 branch again, big changes have been made - mainly because Drupal 7 is a mayor big change in itself - right now I'm reviewing the structure of the stylesheets, bar that everything else *should* be working well and is quite stable.

I'm thinking about refactoring some of the HTML, to make it a bit lighter, not sure as yet, Drupal 7 adds these region-wrappers and other markup and we can probably trim back on the HTML in page.tpl.php.

I am currently using Genesis DarkMatter for my site (www.hauntedreviewer.com) in Drupal 6.x and want my site to have similar colors when I upgrade to Drupal 7.x. Will DarkMatter have a 7.x version? If not, how can I get Genesis to have the same color scheme? Not all my modules have a version 7.x yet, so I am not in any hurry to find this out. I am however curious.

Thanks,
Chris

Hmm, its a good question - what I have been working on is a proper "dark stylesheet", that basically flip Drupal front end to a negative design, this is basically what Darkmatter did + some additional styling. I have this about 50% done, its a huge job to do this actually because Drupal is totally designed to not be a negative design. I'm working on it...

Jeff,

That's great news. I would be interested in seeing your completed theme. I have not found anything yet in 7.x themes that is not going to take major rework for me. My other big concern is migrating content, but that is addressed elsewhere. I will be looking forward to more information from you. Thanks again

Jeff,

It has almost been two months and I was wondering how the process was going? Any idea when you might have all the changes done?

Jeff,

It has been a year since the last entry from you about a Dark theme. Has any progress been made?

Thanks,
Chris
