Yep, it will happen, just not yet, I am dealing with the AT upgrade/debuilt at the moment, which I am using a learning experience how to build a D8 theme system etc, so once I have that down the Genesis update will be quite trivial. I have no plans to radically change the theme other than a strait upgrade (unlike AT which is a fairly radical change).

Sounds good to me! I usually don't upgrade to the new major version until major modules are updated which often takes almost a year!

Any news on a Drupal 8 port? D8 is now on Beta 2, only a matter of time before they are on a release candidate....

Jeff Burnz’s picture

I'm following D8 very closely and even in beta big changes are still coming for themes - markup and CSS are allowed changes even in beta, so what I am many others are really waiting for is the Classy base theme to complete it's task or get very close.

Adaptivetheme has forged ahead, that I started nearly one year ago because its a very complex theme and needed time to mature, Genesis is much more simple and I can port this theme very quickly once I know exactly what is going on in Classy and Drupal core.

I would think this will be before the end of the year.

Jeff, will there be a mobile version of genesis?

Jeff Burnz’s picture

Well yes and no, there will be no separate "mobile" version, I will make it a responsive theme by default, i.e. it will include Breakpoints module integration and use media queries in the layout CSS.

I've been mulling over Genesis today actually, I have plans to start quite soon on the port, I think we're at at point where we can actually start building themes for D8 without too many issues.

harriska2’s picture

Ooh, that would be great. Do you have a timeline for making it responsive? I'm assuming it will only be available in the D8 version...

A gentle prod to Jeff. Any plans to upgrade to 8 or will Genesis die. Is 8 too different for an upgrade?

Jeff Burnz’s picture

It will happen, I wanted to really see how D8 would play out and finalise Adaptivetheme before I took on Genesis, the main reason is that I want the same templates and UI Kit in Genesis as I have in AT sub-themes, so Genesis will be like AT but without all the fancy theme settings and layout system (it will use Susy as does AT).

Hey Jeff, just checking in. Any word on upgrading to Drupal 8?

One more question - might it be worth trying to port my genesis template to adaptivetheme so that the theme could be "responsive" for mobile phones and be used in Drupal 8? I remember trying adaptivetheme and it didn't seem as easy or intuitive as genesis.

Jeff Burnz’s picture

Well it's not as easy that is true, even more so on D8 - truth is ATD8 is designed for two crowds - those with no experience who only use the theme settings, or those with vast experience who want to standardise on it, e.g. a web dev shop. There is almost no middle ground, which is what Genesis in D8 was meant to fill.

I still want to do this, but the past year has been busy with life :)

Thanks Jeff. Genesis is hard to get away from because it is sooo easy to use. The other day I added an Amazon Smile block to the right column. Had to widen it a few pixels. I hadn't done anything for a few years but it still took only a few minutes to fix the width. This is all possible because you write such understandable, common sense, well defined code and layout structure.

Thanks so much!

Oh, and please tell Lisa Chappell "Hi" ;) (just kidding the kiwi).
