This is based on overriding $_GET['q'], and modules that implement hook_init before front_page_init().
The simple fix I used was updated the front_page modules weight in the system table. So it was being run before spaces_user.

Some modules should eventually run before front page, it is hard to determine the exact weight the module should use... Maybe updating the weight of spaces_user is a better idea?

The 6.x version of "Front page" is not maintained any more. This issue is closed for this reason.
Please upgrade to a supported version of the module and re-open if you still have the issue.
