Rather than attempting to configure database defaults directly, it would be far preferable to support this functionality via CTools. While this does introduce a dependency on CTools, this would give us Features integration for free, allowing FlexSlider presets to be easily redeployed and reverted if overridden. A patch that achieves this will follow shortly.
