I posted this in the Image Class issue queue #2173741: Classes can be added to any field, even if it's not an image?, but it seems to be a Field Formatter Settings issue.

Basically the field formatter shows up on all fields, regardless of it only being applied to the image formatter.

This is definitely a bug in Image Class. I re-opened that issue with more details about why. Sorry you are getting a run-around.
