when trying to create or recreate a feature I get the following error

Fatal error: Unsupported operand types in \sites\all\modules\entity\entity.features.inc on line 31

I read the code in entity and don't see a conflict - and the only simlliar errors are three years old.

I am running Entity v 7.1.6

This is something specific to your site. This is not "critical" as it is not affecting everybody using Features. You'll need to do more debugging on your site to determine exactly what is causing this problem.
