In the European Union and specially in Germany fields (you cultivate grain (and all other field crops) on) and pastures & meadows are strictly distinguished because (simplified) you are not allowed to plow pastures and meadows. So I wonder how this information is stored best in farmOS: As different area types or better as a new property of the area type field?

Hmm good question. I would like to give some more thought to area types in general to see what makes sense as an approach moving forward. I want to avoid adding lots of area types that might have overlapping/vague meanings, because it's harder to clean them up in the future (always easier to add types than it is to remove them). So it might make sense to give this an issue all its own and think it through in a more concerted way. See also related: #2930020: Area types needed: gross / net area (and the related issues linked from that).

Alternatively, for this specifically, I wonder if it is enough to simply look at the records of the field to see if any cultivation took place on it. If we add a "Pasture" type, we won't necessarily be preventing cultivation records from being added - that is up to the user to know whether or not they are allowed to based on their country's regulations. I do see some usefulness in being able to simply color-code those areas in farmOS, though.

I created a new meta discussion about area types. Let's focus all attention on new area types over there. Closing this as a duplicate to move discussion over there...

#2931505: [META] Discussion: Area Types

I linked it back to here so we don't lose these points.
