Some of the greatest sites do this already. Take mozilla addons or sourceforge.net or chrome web store projects for example.
The way we currently have it (simple link to the file), people clicking them loose context and need to navigate back ...well unless they are d.o old-timers and they know that they need to open these in a separate window/tab. But they still loose context.
Also, not all of these files have descriptive names, so the images should have captions.

It looks pretty crappy that project images are clickable, but when you click on them you get just the full-size image on a black page, like it's 1995 or something :/
