Improving how we collect specific demographic data - a call out to interested parties

Quoting an email to the DD&I group:

Hi!

I can detail more of the background behind this next week but I wanted to get something out to you before the weekend to give you the maximum amount of time here…

The Drupal Association are looking to step up even further than before the work we do to support people who identify with under-represented groups in our community, and open source in general, come to think of it.

Part of that work means picking areas to “double down” on and really try to make a difference. Based upon data from previous DrupalCons and looking at the community data as a whole, that absolutely should be Race and Gender.

So, during DrupalCon registration, whilst we still intend to ask the “Big 8” question from previous years, in an effort to ensure we continue that year-on-year trend data, we want to get much more detailed data on the two areas of interest. So, two follow-up questions will be alongside it.

And this is where I would like to invite DD&I for their input on the actual questions to be asked, along with a number of similar groups from outside the Drupal community.

I have copied the questions as far as we have got them so far. I’d like to know if the DD&I would be interested in collaborating on refining them over the next week or so. Sorry but we need them actually in the registration system on 9 October.

I do appreciate that I’m asking DD&I to do free work and even then asking the group to do free work by an “aggressive” deadline. You are absolutely fine to politely decline but I didn’t want to not give you a chance to participate - it felt the right thing to do.

Either way, let me know on Monday how the DD&I feel about it and we can work out detail from there.
