Develop/edit content for Contribute by Planning Events Area Page of the Getting Involved Guide.
Tasks
For these tasks, see the following guidelines pages:
Also, add comments to this issue when you do any of these tasks, explaining what you did. Tasks:
- [done]
Take content from the existing section on /community if there is one, and if not, give a similar overview of what happens in this contribution area.Put it into a new page under Contribution Areas.
Page is up, may need more info, but everything from /community is there now: Contribute by Planning Events - [done]
Follow the steps in the Guidelines for contribution areas to get it set up properly (taxonomy term, blocks, etc.). - Add related Contributor Tasks. A Task has a well-defined goal and well-defined steps. Some content that has already been migrated in might need to be turned into Tasks instead.
- Add ) related Contributor Roles. (See also #3091381: Create a list of all roles, skills, responsibilities in the drupal community) A Role is a "position" in the community (short- or long-term). Roles that may be needed for this area:
- Regional event/camp planner
- Regional event/camp planning volunteer
- Contribution event planner [put this also in the Area of Mentoring]
- Meetup planner
Some content that has already been migrated in might need to be turned into Roles instead. - Add related Contributor Skills. A Skill gives you the knowledge to perform a Task or fill a role. Skill pages for this area:
https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/skill/event-planning
https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/skill/organizing-swag
https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/skill/budgeting-and-f...
https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/skill/marketing
https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/skill/wrangling-volun...
They all need editing/writing. - [done]
Add (or migrate from the old Getting Involved Guide) Contributor Reference Information: Background and reference information that is common to more than one Contributor Task.
The event planning information from Getting Involved has been put into https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/reference-information... -- except the parts about mentoring and contribution events, which will be handled on #3159154: Create/migrate content for Contribution Area: Mentoring - Add Contacts section to the page.
- Revise existing /community section to reduce to mostly being a link to this new landing page.
- See if there is any good information in these pages that can be put into Tasks, Roles, Skills, and/or the reference information section -- but wait for #3165327: Event planning documentation for a decision before migrating anything further into Background!!
- DrupalCamp and Event Organizing Guide, Version10 (2011-2018) -- this is huge and comprehensive, should definitely be migrated into / merged with content under https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/reference-information...
- Proposed reorganization of the V10 guide -- this is only an outline, so may not be all that useful to migrate?
- Camp Survival Guide (2018) -- checklist of what to do when, based on DrupalCamp Vienna 2013
- Drupal Camp Organizers Google Drive -- a collection of documents, meeting notes, etc.
- So you want to run a Drupal Camp, Here's what you should know (2018) -- short blog post with countdown of what to do when

jhodgdonAdding some thoughts about the skills, roles, etc. that might be needed in this area.
Also, I took a look at the existing Skill page for event planning, which was recently updated by Webbeh:
https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/skill/event-planning
One thing that seems to be missing is something about coordinating volunteers to take on the sub-tasks?
jhodgdonAdding more info to summary about what content needs to be migrated...
WebbehPer discussion on Slack, we wanted to confirm the area page being named "Contribute by Planning Events" with the taxonomy term of "Event planning" (thanks, u/johdgdon). Bringing this to the Drupal Camp Organizers Slack for review.
jhodgdonbetter title
Comment #8
jhodgdonI went ahead and created the page with the suggested title/menu link: https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/contribution-areas/ev...
We can adjust the title if necessary, but I wanted to have it there.
jhodgdonI migrated some of the background information from Getting Involved for this section today:
(The old pages from Getting Involved noted above were deleted and redirects put in for the base node/1243 URL plus any aliases they had.)
jhodgdonAdded the blocks etc. so updating issue summary.
jhodgdonfix link in issue summary.
jhodgdonOn an old issue I found some links to further event organizing documentation; adding this to the summary
Comment #13
jhodgdonThe content from the community page for this is there now, updating summary.
jhodgdonI looked at some of the suggested content to use/migrate, and have eliminated pages that are already taken care of or are subsumed by other pages.
jhodgdonI created an issue in the Drupal Camp Organizers issue queue about what to do with the other content, so adding that to the issue summary. I am not sure right now whether they want to have the reference info about planning camps under the Contributor Guide or elsewhere. Updating summary.
jhodgdonWe now have a way to filter tasks by type, and there are types defined for at-event tasks and event planning tasks.
#3185876: Add Task Type field to Contributor Tasks for better filtering
So... I think we need to go through the event planning and contribution/mentoring sub-section starting at
https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/reference-information...
and see which of those pages we can turn partly or completely into Task writeups.
