Problem/Motivation
Local Drupal groups exist all over the world, and have small meet-ups with presentations, question/answer format, or social interaction on a regular basis. Currently, they can organize on groups.drupal.org, with a blog and events listing. However, groups.drupal.org is supposed to go away sometime soon. See also #3005613: Add Section Heading “I want to connect with members of the Drupal community who live or work nearby” -- that proposed/added section links to groups.drupal.org to find groups, but if g.d.o goes away, where would it link to?
There are also Drupal communities organized around languages, which may or may not be geographical. Currently, they can be organized around translation on localize.drupal.org, translation of the User Guide, and they can have their own web sites that can be listed on https://www.drupal.org/language-specific-communities
Proposed resolution
The content on the /community landing page related to these groups has already been proposed and discussed on
#3005613: Add Section Heading “I want to connect with members of the Drupal community who live or work nearby”
This issue is about creating two related spaces under /community where geographical and language-based groups can be listed and/or hosted. The proposed navigation would be:
- /community/language-groups -- landing page with header similar to what is currently on https://www.drupal.org/language-specific-communities
- Spanish "space" (see below) or just a landing page. The landing page would link to the translation group on localize.drupal.org and whatever information is on https://www.drupal.org/language-specific-communities currently.
- /community/geographical-groups -- landing page with header explaining the role geographic-based groups play in the Drupal community
- Europe - continent landing page, no header, just provides links to:
- UK - country landing page, which could itself be a "space" or could just provide links to:
- London - local group "space" (see below) or landing page
- Birmingham (similar) ...
- Germany (similar) ...)
- UK - country landing page, which could itself be a "space" or could just provide links to:
- Asia (similar) ...
- Europe - continent landing page, no header, just provides links to:
Each language or geographical group could have either a simple landing page with a description and link to an outside web site, or a "space" on drupal.org. A "space" would have the following features:
- One or more organizers. First one would be approved by the Community manager; others could be approved by the existing organizer(s) or the Community manager.
- Members, who could add themselves (if Confirmed members on drupal.org)
- A landing page, editable by the Organizer
- A blog, which any Member could post/comment on.
- Ability for the Organizers to create Events, which would be listed on the landing page, in the blog, and on the drupal.org Events page
Remaining tasks
a) Decide on whether this needs to be done or not.
b) Decided on details.
c) Implement and deploy.

rachel_norfolkThe /community homepage needs the number of section reducing, especially once we get the Contributor Guide in place.
This item sounds like it would fit best as part of 'I want to connect with members of the Drupal community who live or work nearby'

jhodgdonFound some related issues.
And yes, the proposal in the issue summary here is to have it under the "I want to connect" section. This issue is a spin-off.

jhodgdonI think we need to revive this issue.
We now have a new home for the language-specific communities page:
https://www.drupal.org/community/contributor-guide/reference-information...
It seems like many of the language-specific communities have their own web sites, so maybe we don't need to have a "space" for them to create pages on drupal.org? Not sure. Anyway, at least we do have a page to act as a directory.
If we are going to get rid of groups.drupal.org, it seems like it would still be helpful to have a place for geographical groups as proposed in the issue summary, with navigation by continent -> country -> area, where each group could make a page and hopefully have events and discussions (similar to what we have now on groups.drupal.org). We do have the community events calendar now on drupal.org, although due to time zone problems, I'm not sure how usable it is.
#3164818: Timezone issue with community events
As a local group coordinator, I'm still using groups.drupal.org (it is at least reliable and a central place my small local community knows to go to find out when our next meeting is). Just having a community calendar does not provide that space for us.
