Proposed resolution

I propose the following “I want heading” to be added to /community:

Add the content you want to be added to the website, according to the format described below. You should refer to the Content Guidelines for Documentation for language style and #3003061: [META] Description of page layout and requirements for headings for a wider understanding of final layout.

I want to connect with members of the Drupal community who live or work nearby

Finding a local Drupal group that is active in your region, or starting up or reuniting an inactive group, is a way to connect with others using Drupal, contribute to the community, and grow, personally and professionally.

To find a local or regional group:

  • Start by looking at the list of regional groups on groups.drupal.org (but note that the keyword search is not currently working on this page -- you may be better off using your favorite web search engine).
  • Some regional Drupal groups and language communities use instant messaging tools, such as Slack (sign up and browse the channel list) and DrupalChat.me (sign up, then browse the channel list).
  • Many Drupal language communities have their own web sites, forums, and chat channels, where you can connect with others who speak your language. Visit https://www.drupal.org/language-specific-communities to find these communities.
  • You might want to attend an event in your area. You can find Drupal events at https://drupical.com. If you are new to Drupal, a Global Training Days event might be a good choice.
  • Some local communities and regional events have their own websites, use meetup.com, or are active on other social media. Try a web search to find them.
  • You can also find nearby community members in the Drupal Association Individual Member Directory. This list isn’t all encompassing; however, it is a group of members who actively support the work of the Drupal Association.
  • There is also a list of organizations using Drupal, which you can filter by country.

This section is still under discussion - you can help here: #3005613: Add Section Heading “I want to connect with members of the Drupal community who live or work nearby”

Looking good!

Suggestions:
- Rather than saying there is no comprehensive list of groups that are not on groups.drupal.org, maybe we could suggest doing a web search? I know it seems rather obvious, but ... let's just say I have encountered people for whom it's not. :)
- The two lines at the bottom about Slack and DrupalChat.me, and the one about drupical, are standard content that we need to adapt for this section. For chat, I think we should say something like that some regional and local groups have chat channels, so the action would be to join and then browse channels. We have similar language in the "I want to find people with similar interests" issue. For Drupical, I think it should be added as a bullet item to the main list of how to find people.

Updating based on #3, and adding some additional resources... thoughts?

First of all I really approve of the idea in principle that we are able to offer people ways to reach their local community with more ease. Having one consistent place where this journey can start is great.

However, I must be honest I find the idea that people use the Drupal Association Individual Member Directory as a means to identify people to connect with obtuse. This is not what the listing is for nor I would assume some people would be comfortable with. There are only 2324 so in many cases people are going to hit a dead end here.

It feels like a partial fix rather than a good solution. It has always seemed strange to me that there is not an opted in listing of users on Drupal.org. Would this not be more comprehensive and useful? Clearly only those who agree to be listed should be. This would provide far more and all encompassing benefits.

That is a good idea @pdjohnson about having a drupal.org member directory. You could create an issue at https://www.drupal.org/project/drupalorg to request this feature.

But given that we don't have that feature yet... In my opinion, it is OK to promote the DA individual member directory here, even if it is limited. There is something in the proposed text here about it not including everyone, and I think it is OK to give people a little nudge to think about becoming a member.

I'd be interested to see if there are more opinions...

Urgent: The Drupical web site, which is in the latest issue summary as well as on the site in this section, appears to be down, hijacked, or otherwise problematic... I am not sure who maintains/maintained it, but for now I think we should remove it from /community?

jhodgdon’s picture

Drupical is also mentioned in the following sections, most of which have open issues at this time:
- help using and installing Drupal
- contribute code
- contribute documentation (has open issue #3006698: Add Section Heading “contribute documentation to the Drupal Project”)
- report an issue
- translate
- get a job
- mentor

Should I open a separate issue?

As far as I know, the only (somewhat viable) alternative to Drupical is the calendar on groups.drupal.org:
https://groups.drupal.org/calendar
or the list version
https://groups.drupal.org/events

I think this is the data that went into Drupical. But the site comes across as "unsafe" in browsers now (bad security certificate), and even if you disable that warning, you no longer get a Drupal event calendar at that URL any more. Not sure what happened...

Drupical is undergoing something of a refresh right now and we are looking at adding a definitive events listing to drupal.org that will feed data into it.

In the meantime, I think this is "currently correct" enough to close and then reopen or override when that data changes. Leaving at RTBC for a short while to see if anyone disagrees with the approach.

Created a related issue:
#3137566: Create an area under /community for geographical/language groups

And as a note, this section is on drupal.org/community now... still under discussion is whether it should be edited.
