Proposed resolution

I propose the following “I want heading” to be added to /community:

Add the content you want to be added to the website, according to the format described below. You should refer to the Content Guidelines for Documentation for language style and #3003061: [META] Description of page layout and requirements for headings for a wider understanding of final layout.

I want to: contribute code to the Drupal Project

All of the code that makes the Drupal Project is freely contributed by people all around the World, just like you. Contributing to any large project requires collaboration between project members and the people and processes that make that a productive and enjoyable experience.
The following groups are actively engaged, helping new contributors to join the project:

Drupal documentation is constantly evolving. You can learn about getting started with contribution at:

As collaboration on contribution to Drupal code is such an integral part of the community, there are many ways to communicate with others doing the same and to learn from them. Some examples:

  • Drupal Forums, such as Module Development
  • Drupal Groups, such as Drupal Dojo that help guide new members and increase their skills.
  • Instant messaging tools, such as Slack (sign up, then join channel(s) #contribute) and DrupalChat.me (sign up, then join channel(s) #general).
  • Many meet-ups and Drupal events, like Drupal Camps and DrupalCons, have "Contribution Days" or "Sprints". You can find events planned near you by looking at http://drupical.com

Title: [TEMPLATE TO CLONE] Add Section Heading “contribute code or documentation to the Drupal Project” » Add Section Heading “contribute code or documentation to the Drupal Project”
jhodgdon’s picture

I think this section would be better if it were broken up into 2 separate sections:
- I want to contribute code to the Drupal project
- I want to write documentation for the Drupal project

The reason I think that is that the methods for contributing and the "owners" are quite different for these two areas.

We should link to the Initiatives page

Yes - I think breaking it into two helps - will keep this as code and separate out

I was about to add the dd&i contrib. team and link to the mentoring and dd&i contrib. team project pages, but @rachel_norfolk edited the changes before I could save mine :-) So +1 to that change.

Do you think at this point it's better to link to /core-office-hours or /project/mentoring? Going to ask this in Slack Chat as well.

I think the intro could use some promotional text around welcoming code contribution virtually and in-person as well.

Would the DrupalCon signage text that you iterated upon in the last year be appropriate here, @rachel_norfolk?

rachel_norfolk’s picture

Ah! That signage would be interesting!

I'm happy for you to alter thisa text as you feel fit. Let's say you "represent mentoring"

Are we going to keep the "Getting Involved" guide? It is linked here, but it seems like it should be merged into this new "I want to" community page rather than kept as the mish-mash of stuff it is now...

Also fixed typo. And added link to community initiatives page.

And I think that long paragraph of ways to connect would be better as a list?

I didn't check all the URL's, but I think it would be great if we could add a reference here to the Drupal Coding standards.
Also marking as needs work for #10

I created #3008663: Standardize items about Slack and DrupalChat to discuss how we should refer to chat stuff, so we can standardize and discuss it in one place.

What about the comment in #10 ?

mradcliffe’s picture

I think we're waiting on documentation architecture for rewriting/moving/dealing with the Getting Involved and Contributor Tasks documentation pages. There's a lot of information there that may need to be re-organized and updated so it would make sense to do it once we know how/what place things fit.

rachel_norfolk’s picture

There does feel to be multiple stages required here to get to a final version everyone is happy with.

I second mradcliffe's proposal, that we build this intro page to work with "what we have now", get it up and running and then return to improve the things that surround it.

Otherwise we will be building this for a very, very long time...

That's true :) rtbc in that case.

jhodgdon’s picture

RE #10, rather than pointing people to the entire Getting Involved Guide, how about just to this section on contributing code?
https://www.drupal.org/contribute/development
and we also have (which is good!) a link to the Contributor Tasks pages, which are more targeted.

Also fixing for #20.

I love it.

I thought there was a #contribute channel on drupalchat instead of the #general channel (it was created a little before DrupalEurope), but I haven't signed on in about a month. Is contribution happening in #general these days?

bramdriesen’s picture

I checked DrupalChat and there is indeed a #contribute channel, however it doesn't seem to be that active. Last real chat dates back to 10-14 Sept.

rachel_norfolk’s picture

Yes, I asked some Drupalchat people what to put and they said #general

mradcliffe’s picture

Thank you for confirming, @BramDriesen and @rachel_norfolk!

Dan_Lind’s picture

The text points you in a useful direction if you're looking to contribute. Looks great!
